A directory that maps tools honestly should also map the money behind them. Two case studies, and how to read a backer list as a buyer.
Every tool in our directory exists because someone funded it. That fact is usually kept offstage — tool marketing talks features, and investor marketing talks vision — but the capital layer shapes which tools exist, how long they last, and what they will be pressured to become. So here is the layer named plainly, through the two firms that keep showing up behind the tools we cover: one institutional, one solo.
Accel was founded in 1983 by Arthur Patterson and Jim Swartz, which makes it older than most of the internet it now funds. It invests at every stage, from pre-seed programs to a fund raised in April 2026 specifically for late-stage AI — $5 billion, writing checks that average around $200 million. Its AI portfolio reads like a slice of this directory: it led Paper's seed round in February 2025, led Lovable's $200 million Series A in July 2025 — among the largest Series A rounds ever raised in Europe — backed Cursor's maker Anysphere, and invested in Anthropic, the lab behind Claude. It publishes an annual data report, Globalscape, that the industry cites as a primary source.
What the Accel pattern tells you: when one firm holds positions across a category's editor, app-builder, design canvas, and frontier lab, the category has consolidated its believers. Tools with this kind of backing rarely die quietly — they get funded further, or absorbed.
basecase is the other end of the spectrum: a solo general partner, Alana Goyal, who founded the firm in 2021 after Elad Gil anchored her first fund, and who has since raised three funds totaling $99 million. She writes first checks into engineer-founders — often before there is a product, sometimes before there is an idea — with no decks, no pitch meetings, and no board seats. Early positions include Vercel, Supabase, and Baseten; she was also in Paper's seed alongside Accel. Unusually for an investor, she ships open-source software herself, which is its own credibility with the people she funds.
What the basecase pattern tells you: the tools you will use in three years are being chosen now, by people close enough to engineering to spot them pre-idea. When a solo-GP name like this appears on a young tool's cap table, it usually means an engineer somebody trusted deeply decided to build.
Funding is a fact about runway and incentives, never a verdict on quality.
Reading a cap table as a buyer, three things are real. Runway: a well-funded tool is likelier to exist in two years, and your workflows live on that bet. Incentives: a $200 million round obligates a company to chase growth of a certain shape — pricing, enterprise tiers, and acquisition posture follow. Follow-on gravity: certain backers make further funding and bigger partnerships more likely, which affects how fast the tool improves.
What a backer list does not tell you is whether the tool is good. That you judge from the tool — which is what the rest of the directory is for. And every valuation in this piece moves fast: date-stamp them when you repeat them, as we have here.
