Where should your AI live at home?

Rented speakers listen for someone else. Owned compute works for you. The honest state of home AI — and the devices our lab is drawing.

In Why should you own your AI? we made the position plain: people should own their compute, memory, and agents the way they own a phone. This page takes the question home — literally. If AI is going to live in your house, what should it live on?

The rented default

The current answer, for most homes, is a speaker that is mostly a microphone for a company's ecosystem, plus subscriptions whose memory of your family evaporates whenever a product decision says so. Rented home AI has rented incentives: the device serves the platform first because the platform pays for the device. That is not a scandal; it is just the architecture — and architecture is choosable.

What you can do today

Honestly: today, home compute means the machines you already own doing the agent work. That is exactly what MachineSync is — the laptop in the drawer and the desktop in the office become the fleet that runs agent lanes and indexes your drive, with file contents staying on-device, metadata and light text only. The devices designed for owned home compute from first principles are still on our drawing boards, and we build in the open, so here they are, stage named plainly: AARON is Teka's thin-terminal device family — vision-stage lab work, not products for sale. The Tablet is the large, personal-but-shareable surface you pick up, auth into, and set down; nothing personal lives on it, because your OS, apps, and memory stream from your own Cloud account, and a verifiable wipe returns it to ambient the moment you sign out.

The Totem is the standing form — a framed or podium surface for the hallway, the family room, the office wall. Ambient when no one is signed in (bulletins, weather, the family's shared surfaces), personal the instant someone authenticates. One shared device instead of one hoarded per person: less manufactured hardware, longer lifecycles, less e-waste. And beside them, Hearth — the Totem shrunk to a push-to-talk home box, with a child-safe edition where kid-safety is the load-bearing constraint, not a feature.

Why thin terminals are the owned answer

It sounds like a paradox — the device that holds nothing is the one you most own. But ownership lives in the account, not the object: when your memory, agents, and identity are yours on an open protocol, any surface can become your computer for exactly as long as you are standing at it. That inverts the rented model completely. The speaker listened for the platform; the Totem works for whoever authenticated, and for no one when nobody has.
