What is an answer engine?

A search engine hands you ten places the answer might be. An answer engine hands you the answer, with receipts.

An answer engine is a system that responds to a question with one synthesized answer — sources cited inline — instead of a ranked list of links. Ask a search engine and you get ten blue doors to open yourself; ask an answer engine and you get a paragraph that answers the question, with small numbered citations pointing at the pages it drew from. The reading, comparing, and summarizing that used to be your job becomes the machine's.

How it works, plainly

Four steps run behind every response. Retrieve — the engine searches its index (or the live web) for a small set of pages relevant to the question. Read — a language model ingests those pages, not just their titles and snippets. Synthesize — the model composes one direct answer from what it read, reconciling sources where they differ. Cite — the answer carries markers back to the pages it drew on, so the claim chain stays inspectable. The pipeline is retrieval-augmented generation with attribution; the product is a single trustworthy-looking paragraph where a results page used to be.

The namesake and the class

Perplexity is the namesake example — "answer engine" is the term it popularized for itself, and its interface is the pattern in its purest form: question in, cited answer out, links demoted to footnotes. But the class is much broader than one company. AI assistants — ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini — behave as answer engines whenever they search on a user's behalf. And traditional search has absorbed the pattern from the other direction: AI modes and AI-generated overviews now sit above the ranked links, synthesizing an answer before most users ever reach the list. The interfaces differ; the structure — retrieve, read, synthesize, cite — is the same everywhere.

There is no page two of a synthesized answer. A page is either drawn on and named, or it is invisible.

What it changes for publishers

One structural thing: citation replaces rank as the unit of visibility. A results page had gradients — position four still got found, position nine occasionally. A synthesized answer has none: a handful of sources get read and named, and everything else contributes nothing. The practical consequences follow directly. Traffic concentrates, because many questions end at the answer without a click. Being quotable — one complete, checkable answer per page — matters more than being merely relevant. And the page that defines a term or answers a question cleanly punches far above its size, because it is the easiest correct thing for the engine to lift.
