AI agent infrastructure is the durable layer agents stand on — everything that outlives a single session. Five layers: memory, execution, orchestration, governance, and interfaces. The model is rented capability — everyone has the same one. The infrastructure is owned capability — it's where a company's AI advantage actually accumulates, because it compounds and can't be copied by switching API providers.
Memory. What the system knows: decisions, doctrine, preferences, history — held durably and shared across every agent, so context compounds instead of evaporating. Execution. Where agents run: your device for the quick and interactive, claimed remote machines for the long and heavy, local models for what should never leave the building. Execution is a fleet decision — the terminal stays thin, the machines do the work.
Orchestration. How parallel work is briefed, isolated, and merged: scoped lanes, one orchestrator, human-led merges — the discipline in running many agents at once and scaling them. Without this layer, more agents means more chaos with better throughput.
Governance. Who may do what, and who can see it: consent gates on destructive and irreversible actions, presence for every session, an audit trail under every change. Interfaces. How agents reach the world: tools and data over open protocols like MCP, the web through pages built to be read by machines, and each other through the shared workspace. The interface layer decides whether your agents act on the whole picture or on fragments.
A pile of API keys and cron jobs. A folder of prompts. A subscription to the biggest model. Those are ingredients, not infrastructure — nothing in them persists, permissions live everywhere and nowhere, and no layer remembers what the last run learned.
